Tonight we are hosting our annual holiday party. Lots of food, practically no booze--those who have been invited are like Deidre and me: we've got our quota of drinking in a long time ago. Food wise, we have gumbo, a shrimp mold and sausage pinwheels. Deidre, a cookie magician, (it's not bragging if you can do it), has baked nut balls, brown Lizzies, nut bars, and seed cookies. She is also preparing Tapas.
And some folks will be bringing a dish. I wouldn't let them tell me what dishes are on their way here because I want to be surprised. I'm hoping to be introduced to either hors douevers or desserts I've never tasted before. We're expecting between twenty-five and thirty guests. The number will be a little lower if it snows.
I'm thinking about buying a Roomba robotic vacuum. They're pricey but people tell me they work wonderfully, especially on pet fur. My friend, Steve, who lives down the street bought one and raves about it. He has cats--no explaining taste--and says the robot vacuum does a terrific job on the fur they leave behind. We have one cat, a rotund kitty named Boudreaux, and Watson and Belle. Watson, the Lab, sheds all year but especially in the spring, when he blows his coat. Anyway, I'm starting to think that a Roomba would be a good investment.
I get sentimental this time of year. I have so many good things in my life that I've done nothing to deserve. Life. Sobriety. Friends. Deidre, my uber-wife, my wonderful daughter Elizabeth, my brother Clany, who has come through for me during my battle with cancer, my granddaughter Katie whom I love so much and who makes me laugh with her observations on the world. My son-in-law, Andy, whose only flaw that I'm aware of is being an Auburn fan, is a terrific young man. Alicia, who now lives only a few blocks away, has been a big support for her mom and me in 2011. I'm grateful this year that my brain still works at least a little. Isn't it odd that I can still write at least a skosh but my brain does not seem to function in many other areas. I'm thrilled that I still have a sense of humor--one needs one to live in a world run by the Republicans and by Fluffy Obama. Alicia, who now lives only a few blocks away, has been a big support for her mom and me in 2011. Life, what a gift!
I'll write tomorrow to let you know how the party went. Thanks so much for reading my blog. Enjoy the season!

Hope you had a grand party last night. I too am so thankful that my precious boy, you, our pediatric cancer kids and all of those out there battling MCC or other cancers are doing well. Scott has some pretty severe cognitive dysfunction from high dose chemo, but he is handling it and joking about it like you Rick. I've gotten used to leaving post-it notes all over the house for him. He is here and doing well like you ... Rejoice and Celebrate and thank God !!
I also thought about getting the Roomba for Burton who has a German Shepherd coat and blows his coat 365 days a year !! Our house is called "fur tumbleweed" city. However, I'm afraid that I would need a Roomba the size of a spaceship to do the job ! We still love him to death. He has two new best friends ... .a tiny twelve week old shit-szu (not sure of the spelling on that breed : ) named Maddy, and a more than huge Great Dane named Kaboo. His two friends are coming over to our house for a play date this afternoon. Pray that my house is still in one piece after his buddies leave. Let the wrestling match begin .... canine style !!
Best to Deidre and enjoy your good health and beautiful family this Christmas Season. (Sorry ... I don't do the "Holiday" thing. : )
With faith and lotsa hope,
Diane and Scott
